Cervical Spine
Traditionally, patients indicated for surgery due to degenerated cervical discs may have received an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Fusion takes away the motion of your spine at one level and is not a very attractive idea for most patients. We are excited about a new treatment designed to alleviate pain and maintain motion: Mobi-C Artificial Cervical Disc replacement.
Mobi-C Cervical Disc replaces diseased discs in the neck and received approval in 2013 by the FDA, making it the first cervical disc approved for use at both one and two-levels. In October 2015, the FDA approved the 5-year clinical results confirming Mobi-C at two levels. Patients who received two-level cervical disc replacement during the trial returned to work on average three weeks earlier and had lower rates of subsequent surgeries and reduced rates of ongoing degeneration at spinal segments adjacent to the surgery compared to fusion. To date, Proliance Orthopaedics surgeons have used the Mobi -C technology, and avoided fusion, on over 200 patients. Click here to view a short video outlining the procedure.
Lumbar Spine
In the lumbar spine, there is also new treatment designed to alleviate pain and maintain motion: Coflex Dynamic Interlaminar stabilization procedure. The Coflex procedure is an alternative to fusion for patients with Grade I spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis. The Coflex Technology is a U-shaped, titanium alloy implant that fits between the spinous processes located in the lumbar region of the spine. The device is placed between two adjacent lower back bones after surgical relief of pressure on the spinal cord and nerves (decompression) to ease the pain associated with lumbar spinal stenosis. The Coflex procedure is highly supported by peer reviewed literature and is able to help patients regain control of their lives and get them to relatively normal mobility.
Both new technologies are less invasive and motion preserving surgical options. They are often done in outpatient settings and are well-covered by payors.
Patient Case Study
Todd Cromwell is a Coflex Dynamic Interlaminar stabilization patient. He initially saw me to find answers for his consistent lower back pain. Ultimately diagnosed with two pinched nerves, I recommended the Coflex procedure. This procedure option allowed me to open up a space for the nerve roots allowing for insertion of a small spring-like spacer that provides stability while maintaining motion and virtually removing the pain of the pinched nerve. Cromwell explains, “the biggest surprise, I think was being out of there and feeling no pain in my back at all.
